Retrospect

Why do we ponder longingly the sunset
– when dimming prism hues succumb to the night?
Pause – suspending time – to note the fading light,
the cloud that mars a vitreous sky,
the nearness of the horizon,
the enigmatic distance of heaven.
In passing we judge the day’s action and tally the undone –
reflecting on our losses only as darkness
presses inexorably upon the waning day.
